At first glance, having just celebrated our twenty-second wedding anniversary, you might think my personal happy ending is obvious. I’m fortunate that as often as my husband and I have fallen into various ruts, or slogged through life challenges, we’ve managed to maintain (or reclaim) the romance that first brought us together.
He’s my rock and my anchor, and there have been many delightful ‘happy ending’ moments along the way. But everyone has stand-out moments and one vivid memory comes to mind when I think ‘happy ending’.
My husband’s first overseas deployment came a few years ago, just as the kids were starting high school and middle school. (fine timing, right?) He was gone the better part of eighteen months (due to pre-deployment training). Finally, after a year of sparse contact consisting of brief calls, letters, emails, and the rare video chat, we had his return date.
The mood was near ecstatic as the families gathered, eager to welcome home our soldiers. We thought the formation would never be done, even as we honored the necessary traditions and protocols. Of all the happy endings we’ve celebrated since we met, watching him embrace and soothe our children as they wept relieved and joyful tears has to be the best ending – so far.
And our first kiss after so long apart… that was a happy and memorable moment too!
