Guest Author Jen Wylie

Welcome to today’s guest author Jen Wylie! She is the author of Sweet Light, Jump, The Forgotten Echo and the short story series Tales of Ever. I’m so thrilled to have her as my guest today, and to visit with readers on her blog later this month! So here’s Jen:

How do you Define Horror?

Yes, I know you are looking at my name…and at my title…and scratching your head. I’m not a horror writer. I write fantasy (from paranormal to romance to YA to urban). Or so I thought. Strangely enough, I’ve had more than one reader comment on my horror series.

Um…okay. I don’t have one of those, I do have a YA fantasy/paranormal short story series.

Apparently, it’s all how you look at it. Tales of Ever doesn’t have lots of blood and guts and gore or detailed descriptions of brain eating zombies. It does have monsters. My characters are scared (and often running for their lives.)

From Banished:
We run again, almost blind in the blackness now. The
creature lets out a drawn out wailing screech, as if it has us,
is about to catch us and eat us.
A sob bubbles out of my throat. I nearly choke on it as
Jadus yanks me to the side so hard pain shoots down my
arm. The creature just misses me. Claws or teeth come so
close I feel the breeze of their passing.
Perhaps the horror is more the psychological type?

Here’s a little background on Jen’s Tales of Ever #1-4:
Welcome to Ever.
Ever, a deadly realm where feared, powerful and dangerous magical beings are banished. Though very large, it is not a world but a magically created prison. You can’t break through its circular boundary. Who, or what, made Ever? I’ve no idea. They were powerful, and cruel. That is all I can tell you.

Ever is like and unlike every other world. Nothing is safe. Safety is a dream. Ever is a nightmare. Few survive their first day. Nothing is what it seems. If something appears safe, it isn’t. If something appears dangerous, well it is, but probably more so than you think.

Ever has no sun, no moon, no stars at night. Time is told by the ever changing color of the sky where portals open, dropping new inhabitants, or new terrors. Time does pass. Don’t worry, you won’t get old. You won’t live that long.

The landscape changes without reason form dessert to jungles. The flora isn’t safe at any time. There is food, if you can find it without getting eaten yourself. Most plants and animals are poisonous. So is the water.

Are you afraid? You should be. This is the end. It gets worse of course. Remember the portals? Do think angels come through? Rarely the innocent do. Mostly, it is people of evil, people too powerful to kill. Their magic works here. The creature’s are worse.

Do you understand? Well you will eventually, or you’ll die. There is no escaping Ever. Ever.
The problem is how things are defined these days, or more importantly, all those blurred edges and crossovers within genres. From Wikipedia: Horror fiction is a genre of literature, which is intended to, or has the capacity to frighten its readers, inducing feelings of horror and terror. Horror can be either supernatural or non-supernatural.
