A Greyhound Adoption Home Visit by Bandit the Puppy

From the point of view of our current foster, Bandit the yearling:

They told me all day someone was coming to visit me – me! and I was happy happy happy. I like visitors. When the door chimed, my foster family moved to the door and I leaped off the big upstairs bed and hopped down the stairs.

My foster mom said they were here! Here here here! I was so excited. I jumped on both the tiny woman and the taller man who came in with her. They laughed, even though my foster family didn’t. Jumping on the visitors is discouraged (but it’s fun).

The man was TALL – like me. And he likes me, I can tell. The new people talked with my foster parents for a loooong time, but I didn’t let them forget the important part – me! My foster mom made lots of comments about how smart I am (proving she’s smart too) and my foster dad told them more.

I didn’t listen to all of it. I climbed up on the couch – for the first time ever – and  snuggled behind the tall man. Later I got down and the tiny woman played tug  and fetch with me. She had a very nice laugh.

The new people took me for a walk. Just me! The other dogs didn’t get to walk. 😛 I am always very excited to walk but the leash is confining so I pull a lot. My foster dad tries to get me to relax, but it’s so hard to go slow when my legs want to go fast.

On the walk, I was stubborn and pulled. But the tall man and tiny woman didn’t mind, because the tiny woman was laughing the whole time.

I really like her laugh.

The people talked more when I let them get me back in the house. The other dogs came in and I gloated a little about walking without them. I was so happy happy happy to spend time with people just for me.

I didn’t even mind when the tiny woman sat next to me on the floor and played with my ears and mouth. It was silly and I looooove silly.

Then the people said goodbye to my foster mom and dad. That got me all awake. There was hand shaking and petting my ears and then they went through the door. Without me.

What?

I barked so they’d know I was ready too!  I lunged, sure I could get through before the door closed, but my foster daddy held me back. I wanted to go with the tall man and tiny woman!  I’d heard her say she loved me already. I already loved her back!

My foster mom closed the glass door and locked it so I couldn’t get it open even when I jumped and bumped the handle. I cried while the people got in the car. I wanted to go with them. I barked and cried to tell them to wait for me…

…but they left.

I was so sad sad sad. I barked and cried and watched until the car was out of sight. Then I sat down and waited, sure they’d come back.

But they didn’t. I looked at my foster mom and she knew how I felt, because her eyes watered when she told me it would be okay. She petted my ears and told me they would be back soon.

How long is soon?
